Geothermal Heating and Cooling

Geothermal heating is a revolution in environmentally friendly home heating, and Kensington is leading the way in Edmonton with geoexchange geothermal heating and cooling systems. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, geothermal heating or “geoexchange” is the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost-effective space conditioning system available.

Why go with geoexchange?

Cost-efficient: Operates 40–60% more efficiently.
Comfortable: Uses the relatively stable temperature of the earth for even, constant winter heating and better humidity control and cooling in the summer.
Safe and clean: No flame, no flue, no odours.
Flexible: Provides heating, central air conditioning, and hot water.
Economical for water heating: Reduces the cost of water heating by as much as 66%.
Attractive: The completely self-contained indoor unit needs no noisy, unsightly outside condensing unit.
Environmentally friendly: Emits no carbon dioxide, a major contributor to environmental air pollution.

How does geothermal heating for homes work?

Geothermal heating involves capturing heat energy from the ground source and transferring it to the house. The process uses a number of wells 6 inches in diameter drilled deep into the ground. Loops of polyethylene pipe are inserted to the bottom of the well and filled with methyl hydrate solution. A ground source heat pump is installed in the basement of the home and is connected to the wells via underground pipes. As the solution circulates, heat is drawn from the ground, collected, and transferred to the home’s heating system. This system provides both heating and air conditioning, efficiently, affordably, and without significant waste.

Did you know?

Today, more than 650,000 geothermal heat pump units are installed in the U.S. and Canada.
This is the same as:
• Taking 840,000 cars off the road
• Planting 250 million trees
• Reducing U.S. reliance on imported fuels by 14 million barrels of crude oil per year
